Elis David Almshouses provides sheltered housing in a spacious building situated on Duppas Hill Terrace in Croydon. Located in a quiet side street surrounded by trees and gardens, it is only ten minutes’ walk from central Croydon with easy access to local buses and trams. The current building dates from 1975 and has undergone an extensive refurbishment programme. Residents describe Elis David as an oasis in Croydon.
The accommodation at Elis David consists of 55 flats in total: studio flats, one-bedroom flats for single occupancy and one-bedroom apartments for double occupancy, each with its own front door. All flats are centrally heated and provided with hot water, and include a kitchen and bathroom with shower. Emergency pull cords are installed as standard, and there are lifts to all floors. Elis David Almshouses offers residents independence while giving them the security of a sheltered housing environment. Within the Almshouse building there is a reception area and office with staff on duty. Other facilities include a lounge for social events, gym, library, laundry, hair salon, fully accessible bathroom and quiet room for private contemplation as well as monthly Anglican services. Elis David also has a history room with displays on our history from 1447 to the present, and the building is surrounded by extensive and well-maintained gardens.
Elis David residents also enjoy a regular and varied programme of optional social activities and trips, organised by staff and residents. They also celebrate special events on a regular basis. For example, each April, we hold an annual Founder’s Day tea (with special Elis David cakes!) and visit Mercers' Hall and Chapel in the City of London for a service of thanksgiving and laying of flowers in gratitude to Elias Davy.
Elis David has a Support Team on site Monday to Friday, 8am-5pm that are here to help. The building is also covered by a 24-hour call system that will ensure residents receive help in emergencies. Residents pay a weekly maintenance contribution for their accommodation, which is collected each calendar month. They are responsible for their own council tax, telephone and electricity accounts.
