Become a Resident

Elis David Almshouses is a block of 57 individual almshouses in South Croydon, complete with beautiful established gardens, laundry facilities and a 24-hour telecare system.

In honour of our heritage, we offer almshouses to the applicants who are most in need of what we offer at Croydon Almshouses. Take a look at our application process below.

Check whether you are eligible to become a beneficiary of Croydon Almshouses To be eligible to be a resident, you must: • be 60+ years and over • have a permanent right to residency in the UK • have a connection to Croydon • be of limited financial means (typically meaning £10k or less in savings) • have a housing need • be able to live independently 2. Register your interest in applying Please register your interest by getting in touch with John Hayes, our Wellbeing Team Lead - Community [link to contact details]. 3. Visit Elis David Almshouses We will invite you to visit us and have a look around before we ask for a formal application to be completed. 4. Application If you wish to proceed, you will be asked to fill in an Application Form. This will require you to provide: • contact details • financial information • next of kin details • GP details • two references • information on your particular circumstances 5. Home Visit Two members of our Wellbeing Team will arrange to visit you in your current home. 6. Provisional Offer If you meet all the criteria, we will offer you a Provisional Offer to let you know that when you reach the top of the Waiting List, you will be offered the next available almshouse. Whilst waiting, we will keep in touch with you so you can let us know of any change in your circumstances. 7. Offer of an almshouse When we have an almshouse available and you are at the top of the Waiting List, we will contact you and invite you to view the almshouse and confirm your current circumstances with you. Should you wish to accept the offer to become a beneficiary of Croydon Almshouses, we will provide you with a Letter of Appointment and a Residents’ Handbook. 8. Moving In The Wellbeing Team will work in partnership with you to help your transition to your new home in our community be as easy as possible.

What is Croydon Almshouses Grant Fund?

Croydon Almshouses Grant Fund (formerly Croydon Relief in Need Grant Fubd) awards grants to people living in Croydon who are experiencing hardship due to poverty, age, disability or other disadvantage.

Our grants are usually awarded twice-yearly to the voluntary, community and faith sector and individuals who meet our criteria.

What do we Fund?

 

Our grants have supported a wide range of initiatives, including:

  • Counselling and mentoring services
  • Social opportunities for young and older people
  • Addiction recovery services
  • Domestic violence support
  • One-off grants to individuals in need 

Interested in our Community Micro-Enterprise Project?

Our Community Micro-Enterprise Project will develop and grow a selection of micro-enterprises (small businesses with 8 or fewer FTE employees or volunteers) who are able to offer their support, wellbeing and care services to people in Croydon
