Founders' Day celebrations, April 2016

In April 2016 we enjoyed our usual annual trip to the Mercers’ Company in the heart of the city of London, and also had a lovely Founders’ Day tea at Elis David Almshouses (with special Elis David cakes!) We held a service of thanksgiving for our founder at Mercers’ Chapel, had a brief tour of Mercers’ Hall and also laid flowers at the site of St Michael Bassishaw, Elias Davy’s church.

Visit of Croydon’s Mayor, 7 September 2015

In September 2015 Elis David Almshouses welcomed The Worshipful Mayor of Croydon, Patricia Hay-Justice, and her Consort, Mark Justice. The occasion of the visit was a charity coffee morning in aid of Mind in Croydon, one of the Mayor’s charities. She spoke to all and was taken on a tour of the almshouses building.

Visit to Mercers’ Hall, 27th April 2015

A party from the Elis David Almshouses enjoyed a trip to Mercers’ Hall and Chapel in the City of London, for a service and laying of flowers on the altar in gratitude to Elias Davy. Afterwards we took a short walk to the site of St Michael Bassishaw, where Elias Davy worshipped, and flowers were laid there also.

Founders Day, 26 April 2015

This year we celebrated our Founder’s Day (27th April 1447) in style with a special tea party, when residents, staff and Directors came together. A modern version of the rules (ordinances) of Elias Davy was read out, and our Chairman distributed the traditional ten pence to each resident and twelve pence to the Manager, in accordance with Elias Davy’s instructions. We also reflected on Mary Tate and her almshouses.

Unveiling of plaque on Ramsay Court, 27 April 2014

This was a very special event for us, and the culmination of much planning. We welcomed Simon Wathen, the Master of the Mercers’ Company at the time, and he unveiled the plaque commemorating the founding of the almshouses. He then joined us for a celebratory meal which was enjoyed by all.

Visit of HRH Princess Alexandra, 19 October 2010

Following an earlier visit in March 1975 when she opened the new Elis David Almshouses building, Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra returned to visit us in 2010 to celebrate a major refurbishment. She spoke to every resident, which was much appreciated, and her visit was enjoyed by all.
